The fishing trip through Norway’s south is unique in Europe. Fishermen will be able to catch most favored fish. The Atlantic salmon lives in the rivers which run from far within the country to the coast. Trout and samlet with dark red meat live in mountain lakes 100 m above sea level. Large trout thrive in lakes in the forest and inland waters. Fishing trips to quiet lakes promise a good catch, and small vessels are known for its small, but easy to catch fish.
The “Fishing trip through the south” connects several hundred lakes, rivers and vessels. Roads, perfect for motorcycling invite to travel along them. Beyond the roads, which let the motorcyclist’s heart beat faster, one finds untouched wilderness with uncountable fishing lakes. Here one can relax and rest. Along many of the larger lakes one finds rental places for canoes and small boats. Private, modern standard guesthouses offer accommodation and food. Fishing with a valid fishing license is possible almost anywhere. Licenses can be obtained for one day, one week or the complete season. Why not combine a motorcycle trip with a good catch of fresh fish?
Start of the trip through the fishing paradise is the coastal town of Egersund. It is located about 200 km northwest of Kristiansand. Leaving here the trip leads inland to the lakes swarming with fish along the „Fiskestien i Sør”, Norwayfor fishing routes. Via Tonstad, Sandvatn Kvinlog and Skeie one rides through a picturesque forest and lake scenery to Hagebostard. After 135 km one reaches the first stage, the guesthouse Heddan Gard.
Anyone planning to fish - also with professional help - can throw the fishhook in the water and quietly sit at the banks of the lake or brook. In case fish is caught, one can have it cooked in the restaurant beside it. Anyone not yet in the mood for stream trout or other fishes might like to relax a bit. One possibility could be a boat tour on the boat owned by the restaurant. In the middle of impressive nature one can cruise across the crystal clear lake.
If one feels it is still too early for relaxing, one might want to continue on. Get on your bike and let’s go. The next fishing stop is only 60 km northeast in Aseral. The surroundings of the trip stay as they were: pure nature! In Aseral the Bortelidseter Hotel awaits the travelers. It is located right beside the Bortlidtjonn, one of the many fishing lakes of the region. By the way, Aseral is also called the Norwegian gate to the mountains. Maybe one likes to make a short motorcycle trip in the direction of the mountains.
From Bortelidseter Hotel the fishing trip and therefore the motorcycle tour leads south. After another 60 km one reaches the next fishing paradise: Royland Gard in Engesland. As in other places one could spend hours and days fishing in the streams, rivers and lakes in the region. If you rather like to enjoy your motorcycle you might want to continue the trip through gorgeous wilderness left and right of the road until you reach the next stop at Vegarshei after about 80 km.
Lake Vegar is a paradise for fishermen, if not one of the best ones. Along our motorcycle trip this is the last possibility to use the fishing rod and wait for the big catch. Beyond Vegarshei the trip leads towards Larvik, located about 70 km away from here at the North Sea. This town is the final destination of the trip through Norway’s south. |
