Start and finish: Villingen-Schwenningen
1 to 2 days tour
Kilometer: 320

Witness of the times at the Black Forest
The people there have a bird; to be precise it is a cuckoo. And it hides inside the famous Black Forestclocks. For some it is junk, but for others it is a part of the culture and the Black Forest’s contemporary history.

The history of the times and its guard, the cuckoo, can be discovered on the 320 kilometer long round course. If you got the time or you just like to take it you should definitely try the Black Forest’s culinary specialties – like Black Forestham and cake. But the most important thing should surely be the motorcycle riding, for certain. For that the farthest region in the southwest of Germanyoffers amazing landscapes.

The start of the clock tour is located at Villingen-Schwenningen. From there the route leads in a circle via Vöhrenbach, Eisenbach, Titisee-Neustadt and Lenzkirch into the direction of the Black Forest Panorama Road. At Hinterzarten it moves along the Clock Roadfor the next 46 kilometers. Winding tracks climbing and descending, here and there one finds again and again incredible views and if the weather allows it one might even catch a glimpse at the Alps. Conditions like that can especially be found on the part of the route which leads across the 1241 m Kandel between St. Peter and Waldkirch. From Waldkirch one rides via Gutach towards Furtwangen, the center of the Black Forestclock production.

At this village of 10,000 inhabitants the interested visitor learns more about what time actually means. At the German clock museum the guests are introduced to the history of chronometry. Here one finds especially many exhibits which are produced right at the Black Forest.

Leaving Furtwangen the tour leads towards Schönwald – the place which marks the beginning of Black Forestchronometry. Because here – they say – the cuckoo clock was invented more than 200 years ago. In the meantime there have been produced lots of different birds along with their clocks. The largest two of their kind can be found at Schonach only 6 kilometers away from its place of birth. Therefore the route leads via Schonach towards Triberg where the clockmaker “Hubert Herr” is located. Here the producer is proud to be master over the clocks made of wood and not of plastic. If you rather skip the visitation of the clock manufacture because time seems to be just flying by you can pull the acceleration handle and follow the Clock Roadvia Hornberg, Lauterbach, Schramberg, Tennenbronn and St. Georgen to Rottweil, Baden-Württemberg’s oldest town. If you feel this is the right time to try some of the local specialties you should go right ahead – because this place offers the right surroundings for it.

And than after enjoying plenty of Black Forestham or cake or…the tour leads via Deißlingen and Trossingen back towards Villingen-Schwenningen, the starting point of the Black Foresttime travel tour.

By the way: Along the whole tour one finds again and again witnesses of the time of Black Forestclock history. Whether at Deißlingen, Gütenbach or Lenzkirch at each one of these towns time ticks so one can actually feel it. Up to date information about the clock-syndrome you will find in the Internet.
