Due to its location close to the polar circle Iceland is a challenge for bikers. In most parts the countryside is rough and scanty. But it can also offer surprises right and left of the road: Hot geysers, rapid rivers and green valleys.
The plateau in the interior is scarcely settled and developed. There are certainly roads which lead across the highland. But anyone planning a motorbike tour into the deserted area should better inform himself beforehand about the weather and the situation of the tracks.
The coast has a well extended road network. At every corner the bays and fiords offer a beautiful view at the rough Atlantic. One gets close to interesting places and inhabitants especially in the valleys of the south.
Favorites of Iceland’s cuisine are fish and lamb meat. Especially popular are Graflax (salmon with a marinade from herbs), Sild (marinated herring) and Hangikjöt (smoked lamb meat). Icelanders grow fresh vegetables at their greenhouses which are heated with geyser-steam. Tasty is also in the native Skyr (quark).
Some geography:
Iceland stretches over an area of 103,000 square kilometers and is therefore the largest volcano island in the world. Beneath it the tectonic plates of America and Europe rub against one another; therefore one must always be aware of earthquakes and volcano outbreaks. In Iceland live about 288,000 inhabitants. Language of the country is Icelandic. Spoken are also English, Danish and German. The majority of the Icelanders are of Evangelic-Lutheran belief. The Icelanders celebrate their national holiday on June17th. |
