Ireland is Europe’s "green island". Motorcycling tours across the island offer lots of nature pure, peace without end and a lot of history.
The long shore of 5600 km with its cleft cliffs and lonely beaches is exciting. The little villages and fisher ports are an ideal place to relax and observe. Here the inhabitants are happy about the guests and sometimes like to chat about this and that.
Gentle mountains and green hill dominate the interior. For hours one is traveling alone along the country roads and can enjoy without disturbance the silent country side with its lakes, country estates and flocks of sheep. All over the place one finds villages with pubs; one can flee there, when rain starts to fall once again.
In the northwest most of Donegal is still undeveloped; the south however is strongly frequented. Here the traveling routes like the "Ring of Kerry", Dingle Peninsula and Ring of Beara attract the visitors. Many castle- and monastery ruins are witnesses of the island’s exciting history.
Dublin is a Mecca to those, who have a weakness for a large City which has stayed young, but also has old dreamt away corners.
For cuisine the Ire enjoy what their island offers them: Lamb, poultry, fish and milk products. Typical dishes are served at the restaurants out in the country. Favored are for example corned beef with carrots, cooked bacon and cabbage, Irish Stew, Crubeen (knuckle of pork), Colcannon (potatoes and cabbage) and soda bread (brown bread).
Popular beverage is - logical! - Irish Coffee (hot coffee, brown sugar, whiskey and cream). Aside from whiskey (Irish with "e") we also like to recommend Stout (dark, strong beer).
Some geography:
Ireland stretches over an area of about 70,000 square kilometers and has close to 4 million inhabitants. Languages of the country are English and Gallic. More than 90 percent of the inhabitants are Catholics.
The Irish celebrate their national holiday on March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day. |
