Many people know Slovenia only as a transit country. But it is certainly worth to stop here for a while longer. In the west of the country the mountain chains are as high as 2800 meters. Beautiful mountain pass roads lead by alpine pastures, meadows, wild mountain brooks and through valleys with picturesque villages.
Slovenia is well known for the karst mountain range and its hidden caves. Postojna, Pivka Jama and Crna Jama are some of the most famous. All of them are to be discovered with mountain railways and on foot.
Anyone who uses the "Autoput" to travel across East Slovenia will pass by the vineyards of the Julischen Alps and by small, lovingly decorated wind wheels made from wood, which are supposed to chase away the birds from the fruit trees by its clattering noises.
Slovenia also offers a small shore stripe at the Adriatic Sea. Close to the Italian border one finds the most famous place of the country: Lipica. For centuries the famous horses of the Spanish royal riding school at Vienna are bred here. One can not only visit the stud farm. Here the biker can exchange the saddle for 1 PS. The many nearby farms offer accommodations.

There one can certainly eat typical specialties of the country, too: Sauerkraut, fried sausages and pork belong to the most favorite dishes of the Slovenians. Typical are also Prsut (air dried ham), apple strudel and yeast cake with walnut filling.

Some geography:
Slovenia stretches over an area of more than 20,000 square kilometers and has about 2 million inhabitants. Due to its earlier membership to Yugoslavia there are thousand Croatians, Serbians, Montenegrins, Bosnians, Macedonians and Albanians living in Slovenia. Language of the country is Slovenian. The majority of the inhabitants are Catholics.
The Slovenians celebrate their national holiday on June 25th, which is the day the proclamation of freedom was declared in 1991.
