Switzerland – stands for the highest mountains in Europe (Dufourspitze 4634 m, Matterhorn 4477 m), cheese with holes, discreet banks. But besides these well known things Switzerland has a lot more to offer.
For example one can travel a historical mountain pass crossing the St. Gotthard into central Switzerland. Or one can visit the less monumental, but all the same attractive low mountain range of Jura with its hidden valleys (together with clock manufactures located there). Appealing is also the soft spell of Mediterranean flair at Ticino.
Grisons is the canton with a chain of preceding peaks all above three-thousand meters. The noble towns of St. Maurice and Davos are often talked about. Also worth visiting are the cozy villages of the Engadine.
Eiger, Friar and Virgin are the best known mountains of the Bernese Oberland. Valais attracts visitors with its steep vineyards between Rhône and glaciers and certainly with the Matterhorn.
Around the Lake Geneva one can experience fascinating tours, exactly like in eastern Switzerland and at the Lake of Constance.
Anyone who likes a little excursion back into the vibrant life should go to Zurich. The city does not only offer a vibrating bank- and trading area, it also has a wonderful old center with narrow lanes.

If you travel in Switzerland, you will have to try the cheese (also take a look at our “Tour de Frommage” tip for touring under the headline vacation tours). Of course! It always tastes great no matter whether you eat it in pieces or melted in a raclette or fondue. Further local specialties are Bündnerfleisch (dried beef), Rösti (cut and roasted potatoes) and Gugelhopf (cup cake, often with cream filling).
World famous is Swiss chocolate.

Some geography:
