Nagl and Cairoli shine at final round of Italian Championships
Red Bull KTM MX1 factory riders Max Nagl and Antonio Cairoli were the undisputed stars of the last round of the Italian MX Championships in San Severino on Sunday with a 1-2 result for Orange in the overall competition,
Nagl riding a KTM SX-F 450 and Cairoli on the new KTM SX-F 350 bike were in a class of their own at the Italian circuit. Cairoli took first blood in the first heat with Nagl in second place with the results reversed in the second heat to give Max the overall victory. What was particularly impressive was the margin by which they won. They distanced themselves from the rest of the pack by almost a minute. Sunday was Max’s only ride in the 2010 Italian Championship while Tony was making only his second appearance.

“I was feeling good because today it was important for me to make two good starts,” Nagl said. “I had the holeshot in the first moto then in the second I was in front on the straight after Tony passed me in the first corner. I’m very happy with the result today because I’ve been pushing a bit more with every race before the GP season.” Nagl now plans to train in Italy on hard pack tracks in preparation for the GP in Bulgaria. “We also made some small adjustments to the settings and I am happy with the bike,” he added.

Cairoli, reigning MX1 World Champion said he was particularly pleased with his good starts on Sunday although he was not 100 percent fit because he had been ill during the week. “I was pretty sick all week and not in good shape but Max and I both had a good speed and pulled away from the rest of the guys. That’s a good sign for the championship. I’m happy with the bike, its working well and I had good starts, so that’s already half the race,” he said.

Meanwhile at the French championships at Romagne the junior member of the Red Bull KTM factory team Jeffery Herlings of the Netherlands also had a good weekend. He was fastest in qualifying, even against the bigger MX1 bikes and on Sunday performed well. “I had a good start in the first moto and finished fourth then I had another good start in the second for fifth place. I wasn’t so good at the start of the third race but still finished fifth so I finished second in MX2 overall,” Herlings reported. Factory teammate Marvin Musquin did not race on Sunday at the French Championship
